Where our weather information comes from.
Current conditions, hourly and 7-day forecasts, and air quality data are provided by OpenWeatherMap.
Interactive maps use OpenStreetMap for the base map and OpenWeatherMap data for weather overlays.
Automated alerts are risk notices generated from OpenWeatherMap forecasts. Admin-issued alerts are created by SaloneWeather administrators. Official government warnings come from authorized agencies — SaloneWeather does not invent official warnings.
Sierra Leone has no live tide gauges or wave buoys connected to this app. Tide times and heights are astronomical estimates, produced by a harmonic model fitted to published tide reference tables for two coastal locations (Freetown — Western Area, and Bonthe — Sherbro coast). The model reproduces those reference tables closely during the fitted period; it has not been independently validated against official observations, and it does not cover every point on the coastline. Storm surge, air pressure, and river-flow effects are not included.
Sea state and wave-height figures are estimated from OpenWeatherMap coastal wind speeds (a Beaufort-style approximation), not measured or forecast wave data. The fishing rating is an advisory derived from wind and precipitation chance — conditions can change rapidly.
All marine information on this app is estimated guidance only. It is not for navigation or emergency decision-making — check official maritime and weather authorities before going to sea.
Always consult official sources for critical decisions.
